Shortly after arriving at Yuga, Alastair's mother was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. He went back home to visit her when she began to decline, and then once more for the funeral. The day after he was promoted to Class C, he received a text from his father that his cat (who had been his lifelong best friend), Bartholomew, had passed away.
